Choosing the right college: Oxford University

‘Oxford stands for manners and marmalade, Cambridge for sausages and sums’

Last week we wrote about making a difficult choice: whether to apply to Oxford University or Cambridge University – Don’t forget you can’t apply to both. In this weeks post we go into more detail as to why you might want to choose Oxford University.

Oxford Applications

Why fill in the application form and write a personal statement for Oxford University? (Don’t worry, we can help you with this)

If you have never visited the ‘city of dreaming spires’ you are missing out. Last week we suggested visiting each city to get the feel of the area, to really see if you fit in.

Varsity Education’s Oxford Summer College programme is held over the summer in an Oxford University college, which gives you an invaluable opportunity to experience the undergraduate life firsthand at the same time as preparing your personal statement.

The oldest in the UK, Oxford University is home to twenty-two thousand students and has given us twenty-six Prime Ministers, fifty Nobel Prize winners, thirty international leaders and one-hundred and twenty Olympians, so you’ll be in good company.

It’s possible you’ve heard people mention, ‘Oxford for humanities, Cambridge for sciences’ but it really is just a saying, nothing more. However, Oxford University leads the way in courses covering arts and humanities, life sciences and medicines, and social sciences and management.  Oxford has also won nine Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for Higher Education, more than any other university.

What is so special about Oxford?

Ask any Oxonian and you are likely to get a multitude of answers, you could even as us – our staff and mentors are all Oxbridge graduates and you’ll be surprised how eager they are to share their experiences.

The history, the vibrancy, the literary connections, are just some of the reasons why you’ll hear about the pull of Oxford. Little Alice Liddle first heard of her ‘Adventures in Wonderland’ as she sailed down the River Isis accompanied by Lewis Carroll and her family.

Despite its reputation, Oxford University isn’t all about power, privilege, pomp and circumstance; you’ll be surprised just how open and friendly Oxford is.  Our two-week course will demystify all the stereotypes, the application process and provide all the practical steps you’ll need to get your successful application underway.

You’ll also have the chance to explore Oxford to get a feel for the area, and take a closer look at some of the colleges you may be looking to apply to.

Oxford Admissions

As part of our Oxbridge Summer College, we examine what makes the Oxbridge experience so special. We provide workshops on application preparation and personal statement writing.

A series of mock interviews will also be given where you can practise your technique under the eyes of mentors and staff that have all previously been in your shoes. Our tutors will also advise you on new areas to explore, further reading and common mistakes to avoid.

So if you think you’d like to join the Oxford Alumni, take a look at our Oxford Summer College Programme in more detail and you’ll be punting down the Isis in no time.
